History of Bud Rub

Bud Rub is the brainchild of longtime friends Skye Rapaport and Dr. Ashley Haywood in Portland, Oregon.

In the Fall of 2011, Skye and Ashley were brainstorming pain management ideas for Skye’s chronic pain; Ashley, a Naturopathic physician, had been making various herbal medicinal products for years, and Skye asked her if she would be willing to experiment with infusing cannabis into her all-purpose salve recipe. They started experimenting in Ashley’s kitchen, with various oil combinations, strengths and the addition of menthol and camphor. They were thrilled to discover that the salve truly helped relieve Skye’s back pain, and Bud Rub was born. After sharing it with friends and family, Bud Rub became a favorite pain relief option and a new business venture.

Bud Rub became a company in 2014 and was sold in over 100 dispensaries throughout Oregon. It was nominated “Best Cannabis Infused Product” in Willamette Week’s Best of Portland in 2016. It quickly became a sought after pain relief option, among patients and healthcare providers. After a long hiatus, Bud Rub will be back in May 2020, with the original formula we all have come to know and love.

Skye is an entrepeneur at heart and has always been part of the cannabis world. Once Bud Rub was developed, he was ready to share it with the world. With Ashley’s support, he went through the process of forming a business entity and becoming a licensed cannabis company in 2014. He has poured his heart into Bud Rub and is excited to share it with more people around Oregon and beyond.

Dr. Haywood is a Naturopathic physician and Acupuncturist, with a private practice in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from NUNM in 2006, with a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a Masters in Chinese Medicine. She is also a master balm and topical medicine maker. With her skills and knowledge of natural medicine, combined with Skye’s knowledge of cannabis and need for an alternative to opiods, Bud Rub was created.

Pain relief without intoxication

Bud Rub has truly changed our lives for the better. In a perfect world no one would have to live with pain. However, that is not a reality…

We are proud to present Bud Rub to help you relieve pain so you can live a better and happier life.

What was clear early on was that Bud Rub is a great option for everyone because it’s incredibly effective but doesn’t have the psychoactive side effects of other forms of cannabis.

Skye has been a patient in the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) since 2005, using cannabis as an alternative to opiods. Smoking or eating cannabis can relieve pain, but both methods come with psychoactive side effects that many patients wish to avoid.

In 2005, during the OMMP orientation, Skye learned that there are four major applications for medical cannabis: Smoking, Vaporizing, Eating as in edibles, and applying it Topically. Out of these four main uses, cannabis-infused topicals are the only method that has zero psychoactive effects thus making it a realistic choice for many patients seeking to help alleviate chronic pain. When applied, cannabis-infused topicals provide immediate local relief without any negative side effects on the internal organs and will not cause intoxication.
